NeighborWorks America
Congressionally chartered nonprofit supporting a network of nearly 250 housing organisations with grants, training, technical assistance and evaluation tools across all U.S. states, DC and Puerto Rico.
NeighborWorks America is a congressionally chartered, nonpartisan nonprofit founded in 1978. Its stated purpose is to create opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities. It is also the nation's leading trainer of housing and community development professionals. The organisation is headquartered in Washington, DC, and operates one national office, two regional offices and seven district offices.
The organisation supports a network of nearly 250 member bodies reaching every U.S. state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Those network organisations provide affordable owned and rented homes, financial counselling and coaching, and community building through resident engagement, alongside cross-sector work in health, employment and education. Technical domains span affordable housing development, community development, professional training, grant funding and technical assistance, and evaluation and performance measurement.
Support to the network takes several forms: grant funding for affordable housing and community development work, technical assistance to member organisations and practitioners, facilitated peer exchange to share knowledge and practices, and evaluation tools to assess and improve programmes. Professional learning opportunities are available to housing and community development practitioners.
The organisation describes itself as mission-driven and nonpartisan, with an emphasis on comprehensive approaches to affordable housing and community development, collaboration across a national network, and resident engagement in community building.
