Thinking Machines Lab

Founded in 2025 by Mira Murati, Thinking Machines Lab builds multimodal AI systems focused on customisability, human-AI collaboration and open science; its team members created ChatGPT, Character.ai and PyTorch.

Thinking Machines Lab is an AI research and product organisation founded in 2025 by Mira Murati, formerly chief technology officer at OpenAI. It builds multimodal AI systems intended to be more widely understood, more customisable and more generally capable, with an emphasis on human-AI collaboration rather than full autonomy.

The team comprises scientists and engineers whose prior work includes some of the most widely used AI products: members of the founding team created ChatGPT, Character.ai and the open source machine learning framework PyTorch. Its technical work spans multimodal AI systems, frontier AI and large language model training, and the customisability of AI systems to users' specific needs and values.

The lab's stated industry areas are artificial intelligence research and AI/ML software and developer tools. It follows an open-science approach, publishing research and releasing code, and describes a commitment to broadening public understanding of frontier AI systems while supporting a broad spectrum of human expertise and applications.
